A great quote from Lao Tsu, "a journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step." The right time for everyone to start giving is NOW! This may not be the right time for you to donate 20% of you income to a charity but it could very well be the right time for you to tutor a child in Math.
There are so many different ways to give, if you have money and no time, you should write a check. If you have no money and plenty free time you should volunteer at a school or the food bank near you. If you are lacking both money and time, you should go above and beyond with opening doors for people, letting cars in front of you during rush hour, and picking up things that others drop while you are around.
I am really glad that this blog is getting comments and people are reading it. It is so important that we work together to make a difference. Now more than ever do we need to work to spread love, joy, and happiness. There are so many Americans that have been impacted by a multitude of things: wildfire, flooding, economy, etc. There are children that are all alone and are awaiting a caring family to help. Help us remember that the jerk who cut us off in traffic last night, was a single mother who worked 9 hours that day and was rushing home to cook dinner, help w/homework, do the laundry and spend a few precious moments w/her children.
Help us remember that the peirced, tattooed, disinterested young man who can't make change correctly, is a worried 19 year old college student, balancing his apprhension over final exams w/his fear of not getting his student loans for next semester.
Remind us Lord, that the scary looking bum, begging for money in the same corner every day (who we usually say should just get a job!), is a slave to addictions that we can only imagine in our worst nightmare.
Help us to remember that the old couple walking annoyingly slow through the store aisles and blocking our way, are savoring this moment, knowing that, based on the biopsy report she got back last week, this will be the last year that they go shopping together.
Heavenly Father, remind us each day that, of all the gifts you give us, the greatest gift is love.
It is not enough to share that love with those we hold dear. We need to open our hearts not only to those who we hold close, but to all humanity.
Let us be slow to judge and quick to forgive, show patience, empathy and love.
Amen.
